American Double Eagles - Gold $20

Information about Double Eagles
Historically American gold eagles are $10 gold coins, and double eagles are $20 gold coins, issued between 1849 and 1933. Please don't confuse them with the modern gold eagle bullion coins made since 1986, and containing one ounce of gold, and fractions of one ounce.

The ‘Wild West’ Mint.
The Carson City Mint was opened in 1870 to mint coins manufactured from the gold and silver mined from the nearby Comstock Lode. The Carson City Mint building was one of the earliest ‘substantial’ buildings in Nevada, and the coins manufactured here are highly sought-after by collectors both for their comparative rarity, and for their ‘Wild West’ connections, the Carson City Mint being located within and serving this area during this lawless and exciting time in US History.

Unfortunately for the Mint, this ‘lawless’ aspect of the Wild West’s nature seems to have adversely affected the mint itself, as several of its employees were tried and convicted for their part in stealing over $75,000 in gold and silver bullion several years after minting operations had been suspended in 1893 due to worsening economic conditions and suspicions of nefarious activity. These convictions sealed the fate of Carson City as a coin producing mint facility, although it continued its work as a US Assay Office until 1933. Today, the building itself is now a museum.

During its time as a US Branch Mint between 1870 and 1893, it is estimated that Carson City produced about $50 million face value in US coins.

Coins produced at Carson City are discernable by the ‘CC’ mintmark on the reverse. We occasionally get these in stock and are always looking to buy these coins with a fascinating history and connection.
