Description
The general look of this coin. with an irregular hammered or planished appearance to the "fields", the flat parts of the design, remind us of medieval hammered coins. Presumably this was the intention of the engraver.
Obverse
Being a republic, San Marino tends to avoid having a human head on the "head" or obverse side of any of its coins, so the obverse of this coin bears a representation of San Marino's three famous towers. the inscription being:-
REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO
5 SCUDI

Reverse
The reverse carries a female head, the personification of Democracy, and the single word DEMOCRAZIA. The engravers name also appears, which looks like PERI DI FUZZINI.
