1998 Fifty Pence Gold Proof - EU 25th Anniversary
The fifty pence coin has been the chosen denomination to commemorate significant events in European history.
This tradition continued in 1998 as the United Kingdom celebrated the 25th anniversary of its entry into the European Economic Community and also its Presidency of the European Union during the first six months of 1998.
To mark the occasion, the Royal Mint issued a magnificent gold proof fifty pence coin. The special reverse design by John Mills features a celebratory pattern of the twelve stars of the European Union together with the dates 1973 and 1998. We think it looks like starburst rockets in a firework display.
Obverse - Fourth Portrait
All 1998 coins carried the fourth portrait obverse design by Ian Rank-Broadley.
