Year 2000 Gold Five Pounds
Bullion Version Issued
Year 2000 gold five pounds will be available in a "bullion" version, at a low premium over gold.
This is the first time ever that ordinary bullion five pound coins have been produced, and offered for sale as a low premium bullion coin.
Way back in 1902, five pound gold coins were issued for circulation, but even then, they were probably mainly hoarded as curiosities and keepsakes as the modern cupro-nickel £5 crowns are nowadays.
You may wish to see our page of other gold £5 coins.
The issue limit, at 10,000 is quite modest. We believe they will be very popular.
We have had them in stock for immediate delivery from the 16th October 2000.
Although we sold our our original stocks years ago, we do make an acive market in these coins, together with the "Brilliant Uncirculated" version.

Brilliant Uncirculated- Sold Out
The brilliant uncirculated edition went on sale in May 2000, and had sold out at The Royal Mint some months ago at £525!. We bought and resold one later in 2000, at only £395. Please see our 2000 Brilliant Uncirulated Five Pounds page for current availability and pricing.
Increased Issue Limits
There may be some collectors who have purchased the "Brilliant Uncirculated" issue at £525, having taken into regard the issue limit of 1,000 pieces.
These collectors may wonder why and how the Royal Mint can then produce another 10,000, calling them a "bullion" grade issue. Surely this makes nonsense of the previously published issue limits? Fortunately, we did not promote or sell any of the earlier issued type.
The Royal Mint have asked to to point out that their "Brilliant Uncirculated" version is a different coin. While it is produced to a higher standard of finish, and it is marked with a letter "U" in a circle to distinguish it from the proof or bullion versions, the main features of the design are identical to this bullion version, so while the Royal Mint are quite correct, we believe that the two coins are so similar that they should be considered as different versions of the same coin. Whichever view you take, we believe that the Royal Mint should have alerted collectors to the forthcoming issue of the bullion version at the time the "Brilliant Uncirculated" version was issued. It would be entirely accurate for a collector or dealer to describe one of the bullion issue versions as brilliant uncirculated, which is a well known, and much used description of the grade of a coin.
Tax Free Status
We suspect that the reason for the re-issue may be to establish the five pound gold coins as exempt from VAT under the new scheme. By ensuring that at least one version of the coin sells at under 80% premium, it removes the liability for VAT on all the versions of the same coin.
When originally released, whatever the reason, we believed the coin to be very reasonably priced, even at £325, which represents a premium of under 50%. At our prices, it was even more reasonably priced. Gold prices have changed since then, our current prices are shown in the table above.
