Five Pounds - New Golden Jubilee Design

Now in Stock!
2002 - five pounds and sovereigns have a shield reverse. The exact design was kept a close secret until earlier the last moment, but has now been revealed, and we show a photograph of it on the right. The gold £5 coin, a quintuple sovereign, is available in proof finish as part of the 4 coin gold sets of this year, but has also been made available separately in a "Brilliant Uncirculated" version. We now have stocks of this new Brilliant Uncirculated version.

Shield Reverse
The shield reverse was last used for Queen Victoria from 1838 to 1893 inclusive. It is perhaps fitting, then, that the Royal Mint have chosen not only to change the five pound design for our own queen's golden jubilee, but also to revert back to the shield design.

"U" of Non "U"?
From the 1984 issue, the Mint started to place a letter "U" to the left of the date to denote Uncirculated versions of the five pound gold coins, as opposed to the proof versions, we do not know why they thought this was necessary, but by 2002, they had stopped adding it. Strangely enough, we only just noticed! The last issue to include the "U" was 2001, so all later issues are non "U".

Advance Orders Price
As in other recent issues, we placed large advance orders for uncirculated five pounds. We did originally accept orders at our special pre-release prices. The Royal Mint announced its price at £535. As usual, we had our own more competitive prices.
We still make a market in these, as all coins, at competitive prices.

Issue Limits
For 2002, the issue limit was been set at a maximum of 1,500, of these 1,370 were actually sold and issued.
