2005 Quarter Ounce Britannia Proofs
Each year the Royal Mint issue a number of quarter ounce gold proof Britannias. The quarter ounce gold Britannias have a face value of £25, and weigh slightly more than a sovereign, yet they sell for less than the price of a proof sovereign, making them an attractive alternative as a gift. They are also an attractive coin, and have a lower mintage than proof sovereigns, making them interesting for collectors.
They are often released quite late in the year, sometimes August. We are now waiting for this year's first delivery which should be in June.
More Gold for Less Money
There is over 6% more gold in a quarter Britannia, yet you would have to pay over 13% more for a proof sovereign, taking both coins at original issue price, making the quarter proof Britannia a 19% better buy judged on its gold content. Britannias are in many people's opinion, an even more attractive coin than a sovereign.
