Gold Sovereign Series
Each year since 1980, the Royal Mint have produced sets of 3 and 4 coins in the gold sovereign series. The 3 coin sets consist of a sovereign, half sovereign and double sovereign or two pound piece.

St. George and Dragon - Recut Reverse Dies
The traditional St George & Dragon design has been used on sovereigns, with a few breaks, since 1817. During this long period, there have been a considerable number of minor changes to the dies used for the reverse (tail side). This year, the reverse design appears to have been completely re-engraved, although there was no advance announcement of this from the Royal Mint. Advance Orders
As in other recent years, we placed a large advance order for proof gold 4 coin sets. We are still accepting orders at advance order prices for a limited period.
Last year we did not pre-order any of the 3 coin sets. They are never as good an investment as the 4 coin sets, and this year we believe the official issue price is too high in relation to other issues. We have now bought a very small quantity of them, which we can now offer from stock.

Design News
In previous years the 3 coin and 4 coin sovereign collections have usually contained all coins of the same design, however in a number of years, the two pound coin included with the sets has been the commemorative version instead. For 2008, there is a change. The three coin sets contain the definitive St. George and dragon design.
