2008 British Gold Proof Pound Coin - Farewell to Arms
In 2008, the Royal Mint issued a gold proof pound coin featuring the Royal Arms. This marks a farewell to this design which was introduced 25 years ago in 1983. It is available as part of a 7-coin "Emblems of Britain" gold proof collection, but may also be issued as an individual coin, or in other collections.
Gold Proof Pound
The 2008 Gold Proof one pound coin with a reverse design by Edwina Ellis pays homage to Wales and features one of Wales' most famous landmarks, the magnificent Menai Straits Bridge.
This is the second Gold Proof Coin in a series of four original designs featuring bridges within each of the four home nations, and for the first time ever a gold Proof one pound coin has been offered as an individual piece.
The coin has a substantial weight of 19.619gms, which is almost three times the weight of a sovereign. Each coin is accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticity attesting to the worldwide issue limit of just 5,000, which is signed by the Deputy Master of the Royal Mint.
