Fifty Pences
Fifty pences were first issued in 1969 as an eventual replacement for the ten shilling note. They were also the first new decimal coin. The normal circulation version is made of cupro-nickel, and there have been special commemorative issues produced also in cupro-nickel. In 1992 when the commemorative EC issue was produced, a gold proof version was also issued for collectors. Since then, gold proof versions have been issued whenever there has been a special commemorative version of fifty pence. In 1997 the diameter and weight of the fifty pence was reduced, the proof gold issues were also reduced in size.
