Hall of Shame
Gold Coin Exchange Malcolm Bord Fake Sovereigns
In Oct 2009, we were consulted by an investor who had suspicions about gold bullion sovereigns he had bought from Charing Cross London. We examined them and found obvious fakes.
In mid October 2009, we were asked by an investor to examine a quantity of gold sovereigns. These were shown to us on one occasion, and were contained in a number of packages. We did not count the total number of coins examined, nor did we count the total number of fakes, however we estimate there were about 10 fakes in about 300 to 400 sovereigns. This in itself is not unprecedented, however what was surprising on this occasion is that the coins had, according to the investor, been purchased from a known dealer, Malcolm Bord trading as Gold Coin Exchange, 16 Charing Cross Road, London WC2H 0HR, and the outer postal packets showed this address.
We are aware of Malcolm Bord, but had not realised he was still active until this incident. His website states "Established 1965", and we have no reason to doubt this. We cannot remember whether he ever had any direct dealings with Malcolm Bord or not, but the last near-deal must have been about 20 years ago, when he had agreed to sell us a quantity of gold or silver bullion coins, and he was to deliver them to our premises. Bord never arrived, and we waited late for him, making numerous phone calls to try to ascertain whether he was still en route or not. From memory, it was some weeks later that we managed to reach him by phone, and he apologised for not making the appointment, telling that he had been arrested, and not able to contact us. This did not satisfactorily explain why he failed to contact us the next day, or at least within a few days. We decided Bord was unreliable, and have not attempted to contact him or deal with him since.
Our Conclusions
From our survey of the sovereigns, we were puzzled as to why an established dealer would fail to notice such a significant number of fake coins (Anybody could make a genuine error, and an odd single dud might slip through). There appear to be two possible reasons, first that he is incapable of telling the difference, in which case, he should not be in the coin and bullion business. The second is that he knew there were fakes, and sold them deliberately. In this case, not only should he not be in the coin business, but he deserves to be in jail.
We advised our customer to contact Bord with our findings, and also suggested he report the matter to both the police, and Trading Standards. We asked would he keep us informed of progress, and he agreed.

Copyright Theft
When we took a better look at Malcolm Bord's Gold Coin Exchange website (goldcoinexchange.co.uk), we found one of our high quality coin photographs being used without our permission, and in contravention of our copyright.
If there was any doubt in our mind up to this point, it was completely removed when we saw the photo.
The coin is question is a 1687 Gold Five Guinea piece of James II. We took the original of this photograph on 24th October 2006. Copyright theft is dishonest.
Our Advice
We would recommend any potential coin buyers or investors to at least be wary if dealing with Bord or his company, and preferably to avoid dealing with him.
If we hear any follow up, we will post it here.
