British Gold Proof £1 Pound Coins
New One Pound Coin Series
Since 1983, when the new pound coin was issued, the designs on the reverses of the pound coins have been changed in cycles of five years, one 'British' version, and four other designs each representing the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom. The series of four national designs starting from 2004 is based on bridges.
Gold Proof Pounds
The first gold proof pound was only issued as recently as 2002, but only as part of the 13 coin Golden Jubilee collection issued that year.
In 2003, a pattern set of gold proof pounds was issued, previewing the new "bridges" series to be issued from 2004 to 2007 inclusive.
In 2004, a gold proof one pound coin was issued featuring the Forth Rail Bridge.
This was the First Gold Proof Coin in a series of four original designs featuring bridges within each of the four home nations, and for the first time ever a gold Proof one pound coin has been offered as an individual piece.
The gold proof coins have a substantial weight of 19.619gms, which is almost three times the weight of a sovereign.
The Designs
It seems strange that the Forth design is the first design, but the 2004 pound will be the "Scottish" version, therefore will have a representation of the Forth Railway Bridge as its reverse design.
The next design, that for 2005, is the Welsh version featuring the Menai Straits Bridge in Wales.
Bargain Offers
If you are observant, you may have noticed that the pattern sets represent a bargain. Compared with buying 4 individual proofs dated from 2004 to 2007 at the Royal Mint's official price of £345 each, a total of £1,380, the complete pattern set at our price of £795 is almost half price. We also offer an extra special deal if you buy both sets of the gold proof patterns.
Since we wrote the above, gold bullion prices have increased dramatically, however, our pound pattern sets remain a bargain even at increased prices. Compared with the intrinsic gold content, we are now offering them at premiums more consistent with gold bullion coins as opposed to gold proof coins. Not only that, but at the time of adding this, our 2004 and 2005 gold proof pounds were also at bargain prices. The intrinsic gold content is now about £265 per coin, and we are still offering these coins at £295 each, still £50 each less than the original Royal Mint issue price. Obviously these prices will increase if gold bullion prices continue to climb.
