Viking Privy Mark Set
We were unaware that a set of this type had been issued, but we recently came across a small quantity of mint gold maple sets, featuring a Viking privy mark. We believe these may have originally been issued to a dealer in Denmark, but are trying to find out more information.
The certificate which accompanies the sets states that "This five-coin Viking Heritage Privy Mark Gold Maple Leaf set was authorised by the Government of Canada.", which hardly explains the reason for its issue.
Proof gold maple leaf sets were only issued in one year, 1989. We have previously seen individual maples with a superior finish and a privy mark, but this is the first complete set we have seen with these features.

Special Finish
The finish on normal bullion maples is, in our opinion, rather disappointing, with striation marks visible where either the blanks or the dies, possibly both, have been polished prior to striking. These striation marks look like scratches, espepcially when trying to capture high quality photographic images. From the creation of this, our Tax Free Gold website until July 2004, we struggled to obtain good quality images of gold maples, then we managed to buy one of the sets shown on this page, and also a 1989 proof maple set. This enabled us to upgrade the rather mediocre maple images we were previously using.

Lacquered Wooden Box
The box appears to be a very attractive wooden box with an oriental lacquer finish. If by some chance it is plastic, then it has us competely fooled!
