2002 Alderney Golden Jubilee Piedfort Gold Proof £5 Coin

In 2002, Alderney issued a piedfort £5 gold proof coin to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

As the head of state, the Queens role is mainly formal. She has visited every continent of the world, forging crucial bonds with Commonwealth countries.

Design

The reverse was designed by Marcel Canioni. It features the hilt of the Sword of State with the Royal Standard, representing the Queens position as the Head of State.

The obverse is the Raphael Maklouf portrait of the Queen.

Piedfort

Piedfort coins can be traced all the way back to the twelfth-century, in France. They became court prizes for the King, who would sometimes give them away to court celebrities.

In the UK, medieval and Tudor examples are known to have existed, but as pattern coins, for the engraver to check the quality of their work.
