2002 Australian Prospector Gold Nugget Proof Sets
In 2001 Australia introduced a 'Prospector' series of proof gold nugget coins, marking the 150th anniversary of Australia'a first major gold find in 1851. The series will run for 5 years. The 2002 set shown on this page is therefore the second in the series.

Description
The one ounce coins in the series all feature colour printed highlights in the design. The 2002 one ounce coin shows a scene of two prospectors using the "dry blowing" process to separate gold. In very dry regions of Australia, prospectors relied on the wind to blow lighter materials, such as sand and gravel, away from the higher density gold held in their pans. A dry blowing machine worked on bigger loads, using a rocking motion in the wind to separate the gold. This is the second design in the Australian Prospector five year companion series or Proof Nugget coins, which celebrate the significance of gold in Australia's history.
Each of the four smaller coins feature a kangaroo drinking from a billabong. The aboriginal word billabong refers to a waterhole in a creek that dries up outside the rainy season.
