American Gold $1 - One Dollar Coins
US gold one dollar coins were issued for use in circulation between 1849 and 1889.
There were three different designs, two of them with an Indian head, one with a Liberty head. As a $10 is called a gold eagle, these diminutive coins should logically be called a tenth eagle, but we have never heard them referred to as such.
We guess that they fell out of usage because of their inconveniently small size.
Please don't confuse them with the modern tenth ounce gold bullion eagles.
