1989 Proof Gold Maple Leaves Gold proof sets of Canadian maple leaf coins. The first time we bought a one ounce gold proof maple leaf was only in July 2006. Before that we had been asked for them, but had never seen one. Once we owned one, we checked it in the Krause catalogue, and found it hard to believe that the Royal Canadian Mint have only issued proof gold maples in one year, 1989. Quite why they implement this policy, we don't know, but policymakers at world mints seem to make their own decisions about what collectors will want. It is not our business to try to influence their decisions, merely to make a market in coins of almost every description. At least it makes it easy to know which dates we do or don't have in stock! They were issued in a plastic capsule within a wooden box, which we believe is in maple wood.
