Half Sovereigns - New Golden Jubilee Design
Proofs Now in Stock!
This year's - 2002 - half sovereigns and sovereigns have a shield reverse. The exact design was kept a close secret until recently, but has now been revealed, and we show a photograph of it on the right. We now have stocks of both proof and uncirculated versions.
Proofs Released in January
For year 2002, the proofs were scheduled to be issued in January instead of April, and the Uncirculated or bullion issue to be delayed from January to February. We have now received our first delivery of the proof half sovereigns, and also the full sovereigns.
The slight production delay on the proofs has not affected the uncirculated version, which we now also have in stock.
Shield Reverse
The shield reverse was last used for Queen Victoria from 1838 to 1893 inclusive. It is perhaps fitting, then, that the Royal Mint have chosen not only to change the half sovereign design for our own queen's golden jubilee, but also to revert back to the shield design.
Issue Limits
For 2002, the issue limit has been set at a maximum of 100,000. This is the same as for 2002, despite the fact that the Golden Jubilee celebration will make this new issue even more popular. The issue limit for the proofs has also been maintained at 12,500 individual coins, excluding those issued as part of the 3 and 4 coin gold proof sets.

Year 2002 Gold Half Sovereigns
Two Versions:-
Year 2002 gold half sovereigns are being produced by the mint in two versions, ordinary uncirculated "bullion" grade, and "proofs" for sale to collectors.
Proof Version
The proof version has sold out out the Royal Mint, but we still have a small quantity available from stock. Please see our current prices below.
Uncirculated "Bullion" Version
This is only the third time since 1982 that ordinary bullion half sovereigns have been produced. As with the millennium year, we expect these new half sovereigns to be very popular.
The issue limit for year 2000 was set at 250,000. This was the lowest mintage figure, apart from proof versions, for over 100 years. The limit for 2001 was even lower at only 100,000.
