2005 Fifty Pence Gold Proof - Samuel Johnson's Dictionary
Samuel Johnson, also known as Dr. Johnson, started work on one of his most important books A Dictionary of the English Language in 1746 but it was not completed until 1755. Although it was widely praised and extremely influential, it was not a lucrative enterprise for Johnson as he himself had to bear the expenses of its long composition.
This gold proof fifty pence is issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its publication.
Obverse - Fourth Portrait
All 2005 coins carried the fourth portrait obverse design by Ian Rank-Broadley.
