2013 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Christopher Ironside Gold Proof Fifty Pence Coin
In 2013, The Royal Mint issued fifty pence coins to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Christopher Ironside.
Christopher Ironside
Christopher Ironside was a well known numismatic artist, who created the reverse designs for Britain's decimal coinage. He was born on 11th July, 1913, and this coin celebrates 100 years since his birth.
One of his most iconic designs is the seated Britannia, as found on the reverse of 50p coins. For this reason, the 50 pence coin was chosen to show another of his designs, the Ironside Royal Arms.
Obverse - Fourth Portrait
All British 2013 coins carry the fourth portrait obverse design by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Reverse
The reverse features Ironside's Royal Arms design, which was never adopted.
