Type Set of all 4 Designs
In September 2003, the Royal Mint suddenly produced a type set of all four gold Britannia designs to date in uncirculated bullion grade. This may not excite collectors of proof Britannias who may already have all 4 designs, but for those enthusiasts who collect only bullion coins this news will create a ripple of excitement because the 1997 chariot design had never yet been seen in the bullion version, to the best of our knowledge.
It also raises the question whether the Royal Mint have produced backdated coins, a practice which we do not consider to be entirely ethical, or whether they have had these coins stockpiled somewhere in their vaults, without managing to have them stolen. We will attempt to discover more*, but knowing the Royal Mint's customary secrecy, it may require the equivalent of a Hutton enquiry to establish the truth.
Meanwhile we expect to have news of the availability and prices of these sets within the next two weeks.

By the time we had managed to acquire a small quantity of the 1997 Chariot design, we had sold out of the 2001, but still had a few of the 2003 available. We have since bought a modest parcel of the 2001, but have now sold out of the 2003, and have no way of knowing when we will ever see any more. We can offer the 1997, please see our Britannia Dates page, this is in fact the best place to look at our current availability of all dates and types.
Our advice to anybody wanting a type set is to buy what we have immediately, while we have it in stock, and then to wait patiently for the remaining issues, or keep watching our website for updated availability.
Meanwhile, we expect another one-off design to be released in 2005, we fully intend to acquire a sufficient stock when they become available. If we had to guess a release date, we would probably say August 2005. Watch this space.
