Sierra Leone
Brief Sierra Leone History
The government is slowly reestablishing its authority after the 1991 to 2002 civil war that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (about one-third of the population). The last UN peacekeepers withdrew in December 2005, leaving full responsibility for security with domestic forces, but a new civilian UN office remains to support the government. Mounting tensions related to planned 2007 elections, deteriorating political and economic conditions in Guinea, and the tenuous security situation in neighboring Liberia may present challenges to continuing progress in Sierra Leone's stability.
Sierra Leone Coins
Sierra Leone became fully independent in 1961, and issued its first gold coins in 1964. Previously, the area used coinage issued by British West Africa.
2005 Pope John Paul II Memorial Crown
In April 2005, Sierra Leone announced the issue of a memorial coin for Pope John Paul II, who died on Sunday 2nd April 005, and whose funeral was on Friday 8th April 2005, causing Prince Charles to postpone his wedding to Mrs. Camilla Parker Bowles.
This coin is in Remembrance of His Holiness Pope John Paul II. This deeply meaningful coin serves as a tribute to the late Pope, which recalls his faith and commitment.
His Holiness John Paul II Commemorative Coin. Thousands congregated in St. Peter’s Square praying for Pope John Paul II in his final hours and wept upon hearing the news that he had passed away. To honour one of the greatest and most popular Popes of all times Sierra Leone has issued this attractive commemorative coin. The youngest Pope of the 20th Century at the age of 58, and the first non-Italian Pope for nearly 500 years, he helped to breach the gap between Christianity, Judaism and Islam and his support for freedom in Poland helped to achieve the collapse of Communist Dictatorship throughout Europe.
