The proof Britannia gold sets are usually released each year in August or later. The silver Britannias were released earlier in 2005, although this may change again in 2006.
2006 Gold Britannia Proof Set - Advance Order Prices
For the collector who wants to ensure receiving the latest coin issues as soon as they are released, we can offer advance ordering at special prices.
We have held our advance order prices for the 2006 four coin gold Britannia proof sets.
Britannia proof sets have been issued every year since 1987. In 2000, they went on sale around August, and the issue limit of 750 sets sold out by October.
New 3 Coin Britannia Set
In 2003, the Royal Mint introduced a 3 coin Britannia gold set. Although we had mixed feelings about this, but there is no doubt it will have been attractive to those whose budget doesn't stretch to the complete four coin set. In addition, they may also be bought for christening and other gifts, where the affordable price will make a difference. We expected that the 3 coin set would be repeated this year, and it has.
Boycott
Most years, we purchase a number of these new, ordering before they are released. This year we feel the Royal Mint's price increase is far too high, making the coins even more expensive than usual (we usually offer them at a reasonable discount). Also the Mint has reduced its dealers discounts, and increased the quantity requirements, making it even more marginal for us to stock and distribute these. We also believe the Mint's pricing to be based on gold at about £380 per ounce compared with its recent £310 level.
Although the word boycott is rather strong, we have decided not to stock and offer them from new this year, and will wait until they become available in the secondary market.
Naturally this means that we currently wish to buy these sets.
